Exploring coastal Nature-based Solutions for climate adaptation

About

Exploring coastal Nature-based Solutions for climate adaptation

The short course is designed to foster hands-on expertise, deepen conceptual understanding, and promote teamwork, empowering participants to successfully implement Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) in diverse real-world scenarios. Participants will take part in a comprehensive program that includes process-based learning lectures, and hands-on field excursions led by experts across multiple disciplines, including coastal dynamics, social sciences, and climate adaptation. The curriculum covers a wide array of NbS approaches, such as coastal risk and management, risk communication, ecological restoration, and community-based adaptation.

Objectives of the Course

Capacitate participants to implement more sustainable coastal NbS in real-world contexts through science-based concepts, hands-on exercises, and collaborative discussions.

Deepen understanding of NbS principles, through a socio-ecological perspective, integrating insights from diverse disciplines to effectively address environmental challenges in an equitable, just, and inclusive manner for coastal communities.

Target Audience

Early career researchers (MSc and PhD) from environmental sciences, geography, geosciences or biological sciences, and coastal managers.

The Course will be held at the University of Algarve (Campus of Gambelas), located in Faro (South Portugal). The University is located 5 km from Faro city centre and is well connected by buses.

Faro has an airport with a vast net of connections to different European cities (many of which through low-cost flight services).

Field visits will take place at the Ria Formosa natural park, a beautiful coastal lagoon, at the doorstep of the University.
