PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Summer Course includes Theoretical Classes, Field Work and Practical Activities. The main objective is to provide the participants with fundamental concepts about (1) the tidal and sand dynamics in semi-closed basins and (2) essential training for the acquisition and processing of hydrographic data in nearshore areas.
The Theoretical Classes will focus on the following topics applied to semi-enclosed basins:
The Practical Activities will address the following topics:
Field Work will be conducted at the main channels of the Ria Formosa using widely used equipment such as ADCP, Pressure Sensors, Turbidity meters and CTD sondes. The field activities will include seabed moorings and a tidal cycle survey, performed with the educational vessel MARUALG from the University of Algarve.
- Tides
- Shallow water tides and tidal residuals
- Effects of density gradients and wind
- Sediment (sand) transport
- Principles of operation of the equipment to be used
- Instruments preparation and configuration for
deployments
- Processing of data recorded
