Creation and evaluation of a podcast about food sustainability
Research about science communication in the media can help practitioners make more suitable decisions for their activities. In this project, the effectiveness of communication of a podcast is assessed regarding knowledge and interest through an experimental approach. Ten short audio podcast episodes are produced about Portuguese research on sustainable food, covering a variety of subjects in collaboration with the Portuguese national radio channel Antena 1. Two episodes are chosen for the effectiveness test. Undergraduate students from two universities in Lisbon fill out an online questionnaire, and a week later after listening to one podcast or reading one news piece, fill out the post-test questionnaire. Statistical analysis is done to find if there are significant differences in the knowledge and interest in the theme of food sustainability or science.
The project objectives are to: 1. Communicate about scientific developments that address present and future challenges for food sustainability. 2. Engage audiences with the topic of sustainable food production and use of natural resources. 3. Assess the effectiveness of podcasts/radio broadcast in the cognitive and emotional dimensions in comparison to press news.
