C. E. Monteiro graduated in Oceanography from the University of the Algarve and holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico. His research is focused on trace element geochemistry in aquatic systems and urban environments: sources and distribution, speciation and reactivity, with a strong component on the development/optimization of analytical methods. Other research topics include elemental fluxes, bioaccumulation and biotransformation, with a special emphasis on priority pollutants and inorganic contaminants of emerging environmental concern, mainly from the group of Technology-Critical Elements (TCEs), such as the Platinum-Group Elements (PGEs). Research in the field of marine and estuarine chemistry and environmental analytical chemistry, for understanding ocean dynamics by improving coastal/ocean observations and modelling.
