Carlos Loureiro is an Assistant Professor in Geosciences at the University of Algarve, and holds a BSc in Physical Geography and a PhD in Earth and Marine Sciences, with specialization in Geomorphology. He is also Honorary Research Fellowship at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa and before rejoining UAlg and CIMA he was a Lecturer in Physical Geography at the University of Stirling in Scotland, and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at Ulster University in Northern Ireland. Carlos is a coastal geomorphologist working in the impacts of extreme storm events, sea level rise and mesoscale coastal evolution. He has worked on the coasts of Portugal, South Africa, UK and Ireland on a variety of research projects that normally include many hours on a beach and at sea collecting morphological, sedimentary, geophysical and hydrodynamic data that is used to understand process-response relationships in coastal and nearshore systems. His research is focussed on the morphodynamics of coastal environments, at scales that range from individual storm events to decadal and centennial coastal evolution under changing sea levels, exploring many different approaches and tools, from detailed field experiments to underwater and satellite remote sensing, as well as numerical modelling and spatial analysis.
