A global ‘greening’ of coastal dunes: An integrated consequence of climate change?

Ocean and Freshwater NFVI chapter

Ocean and Freshwater NFVI chapter

On October 23-24th, experts from the European Marine Board Working Group "Navigating the Future VI" met for the first time at the InnovOcean campus, in Ostend, to set the foundations of the 6th edition of the blueprint "Navigating the Future VI". As a dialogue across disciplines, NFVI will explore the role of the Ocean on earth, focusing on the ocean sciences we need to explore and address the issues related to four main interconnected themes/chapters: the Ocean’s links with people, climate, freshwater, and biodiversity. The NFVI publication is expected to have important impacts on marine research and policies, at national, European and international scale.
The researchers Tainá Fonseca (CIMA) and Peter Kraal (Royal NIOZ - Netherlands) leads the Ocean & Freshwater chapter, focusing on the continuum between land, freshwater and the and Ocean, and highlighting relevant recommendations. This kick-off meeting was fruitful to identify cross-cutting themes for all marine sciences, including the recent development of sustainable sciences, the importance of ocean literacy and of bringing more disciplines into marine research, the consideration of multiple stressors into our modeling, and the questions of gender and equity in all Ocean sciences and actions.  A final publication is expected in 2024.

Modeling of coastal erosion in exposed and groin-protected steep beaches

Modeling of coastal erosion in exposed and groin-protected steep beaches

CIMA researchers Juan L. Garzon and Óscar Ferreira, in collaboration with Theocharis Plomaritis from the University of Cadiz, just published an article focused on the ability of numerical models to simulate coastal erosion in exposed and groin-protected steep beaches during extreme oceanic events. The article assesses the sensibility of the numerical model (XBeach) to changing parameters and presents the calibration and validation of the model for two storms at Praia de Faro and Quarteira. Our results demonstrated that after the calibration, the model can successfully reproduce morphological changes during storm events at these two sites. Moreover, it provides recommendations for the implementation of the model on other steep beaches.

Abstract
Process-based models are suitable tools for reproducing storm-driven erosion. However, their performance has been mainly examined on mild-slope sandy beaches and their use on steep beaches still represents a challenge. Here, open-source process-based model XBeach experiments were combined with topographical measurements collected for two storms (16- and 5-year return period) to obtain a reliable model. The model parameters “facua” (parameterized wave asymmetry and skewness sediment transport component), “bermslope” (upslope transport term for semireflective beaches), and “wetslope” (critical avalanching submerged slope) were utilized for calibration and validation. The 16-year storm simulations on an exposed beach revealed that whether bermslope increased and “facua” must be reduced, and vice versa, to properly simulate erosion. Adding bermslope provided excellent results for these storms when using facua and wetslope values close to the recommended values. In a groin-protected site, XBeach was successfully calibrated and validated for the tested storms using these parameters, although with different values. These experiments demonstrated that the appropriate use of these parameters can satisfactorily simulate morphological changes on steep beaches for different hydrodynamic conditions and coastal settings (exposed and groin protected).

Energy transition process and community engagement on geographic islands: The case of Culatra Island (Ria Formosa, Portugal)

CIMA researchers André Pacheco e Cláudia Sequeira, in collaboration with Jânio Monteiro and Jóni dos Santos from the ISE/UAlg, and José Nunes from MakeItBetter, just published an article focused on the importance of community engagement on energy transition processes. The article covers multiple aspects of a green transition process, including technical, environmental, social, and economic issues. Starting by a participatory diagnosis process, the community of a small island located in Portugal (Culatra Island, Algarve), was challenged to lead the transition process and define different pillars of energy transition. The process brought together local authorities, academia, citizens and companies. Using practical examples, it is shown how the community is succeeding in tailoring new technological solutions for a green transition, according with the specific needs of the island, as expressed by the islanders themselves, including batteries, electric vehicles, retrofitting of homes, or heat pumps, which, when combined, could lay the foundations for the creation of a Renewable Energy Community and leverage socioeconomic benefits.

Short-term effects of winter warming and acidification on phytoplankton growth and mortality: more losers than winners in a temperate coastal lagoon

Short-term effects of winter warming and acidification on phytoplankton growth and mortality: more losers than winners in a temperate coastal lagoon

CIMA researchers Rita Domingues, Helena Galvão and Ana Barbosa, in collaboration with Vanda Brotas from the Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre (MARE), just published an article focused on the isolated and interactive effects of warming and acidification on phytoplankton growth and mortality in the Ria Formosa coastal lagoon, in a winter situation. This study employed an experimental approach with microcosm experiments and manipulation of temperature and concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2), to evaluate the effects on phytoplankton growth rates, production, community structure, and grazing exerted by microzooplankton. Results showed that, overall, growth and grazing decreased with increasing temperature, but these effects were alleviated in some phytoplankton groups by increased CO2. Warming benefited only the smaller-sized phytoplankton, such as cyanobacteria, and acidification was beneficial for diatoms. These results suggest that the winter phytoplankton community from the Ria Formosa is well adapted to ambient conditions, and warming may have, on the short-term, negative effects that can be alleviated by acidification. Climate change-related variables, such as temperature and CO2, are usually approached from an adaptive, long-term context, but they also vary on shorter time scales. Therefore, the study of phytoplankton plastic responses will provide a basic understanding of ecological and physiological mechanisms that may further impact phytoplankton acclimation and adaptation to future environmental change.

Place attachment, risk perception, and preparedness in a population exposed to coastal hazards: A case study in Faro Beach, southern Portugal

Place attachment, risk perception, and preparedness in a population exposed to coastal hazards: A case study in Faro Beach, southern Portugal

Effects of Tidal-Forcing Variations on Tidal Properties Along a Narrow Convergent Estuary

In a new article, a researcher from CIMA (Erwan Garel) describes a new analytical approach to analyse tidal propagation along estuaries in function of variable forcing conditions at the mouth (e.g., tidal amplitude). Applied at the Guadiana Estuary, the method provides direct insights about neap-spring variations resulting from the relative effects of friction, morphologial convergence and wave reflection at the estuary head.

“MULHERES E O MAR”

E, no entretanto, onde estiveram as mulheres?

The Center continues the study on the effect of microplastics on bivalves

It is estimated that there are currently 150 million tons of plastics in the oceans, and that by 2050 they could reach 850 million tons, when more plastic is expected to be available than fish in the ocean. CIMA - Center for Marine and Environmental Research of UAlg, aware of this serious problem, is carrying out several research on the effect of microplastics on bivalve molluscs, and recently published the latest findings in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science (FMARS). "

This publication was the result of a collaboration with the University of Antwerp in Belgium and the Man-Technology-Environment Research Center (MTM) of the University of Orebo, Sweden.

Held under the JPI Oceans EPHEMARE project, research focuses on the ecotoxicological effects of microplastics with other contaminants (petroleum components, tanning agent components) absorbed in marine ecosystems. Microplastics are plastics smaller than 5 millimeters, which result from the degradation of plastic in the ocean.

In the now published article it was concluded that microplastics have an inflammatory effect on the species studied and are also a source of contamination with other contaminants such as those derived from hydrocarbons to marine organisms.

It should be noted that in an article published in 2017 in the magazine Marine Pollution Bulletin by the CIMA team, in collaboration with researchers from the Molecular Chemistry-Physics Center and the Institute of Nanosciences and Nanotechnology of the Instituto Superior Técnico, that these bivalves can accumulate microplastics in their tissues. This accumulation gives rise to oxidative stress, neurological and genetic effects. Even after exposure to microplastics is complete, the total elimination of the tissues of these bivalves takes more than a week, indicating that these accumulated microplastics can be transferred to higher trophic levels.

Anthropogenic pressures on coastal wetlands

Anthropogenic pressures on coastal wetlands

A newly published article, Anthropogenic pressures on coastal wetlands, results from the collaboration of past and present members of Future Earth Coasts, (formerly LOICZ). This was a large, review paper with many collaborators, and three of the co-authors are from CIMA-Centre for Marine and Environmental Research. CIMA is a Regional Engagement Partner of Future Earth Coasts.
The lead author, Alice Newton a former LOICZ chairperson, says: "Global projects, like Future Earth Coasts, bring scientists together, so that they can gain a common perspective on global issues". The article covers wetlands from the Arctic to the equator, in six continents. Some of the wetlands are small and some are very large. Some are in densely populated areas and some are remote. "We used the same social-ecological framework, based on DPSIR (Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response), to analyse all these wetlands" said Alice. "We look forward to a second article, in which we can further the analysis to look for equitable, sustainable solutions, not just to describe the problems".
The article is available in Open Access from this link.

Simulating Destructive and Constructive Morphodynamic Processes in Steep Beaches

Simulating Destructive and Constructive Morphodynamic Processes in Steep Beaches

The full cycle of beach morphodynamic change (erosion and gradual recovery), critical to assessing beach change over longer temporal scales, is modelled following an innovative approach (models typically focus only on erosion) for the incidence of Emma storm in Faro Beach.

Rocha, T. L., E. Bilbao, C. Cardoso, M. Soto, M. J. Bebianno (2018). Changes in metallothionein transcription levels in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to CdTe quantum dots. Ecotoxicology, 27,(4), 402–410

Two members of CIMA, M. Bebianno and Thiago Rocha published the article “Changes in metallothione in transcription levels in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to CdTe quantum dots” recently in the Ecotoxiclogy journal. Quantum dots are fluorescent metal nanoparticles, which have a cadmium core and due to their optical properties have various biomedical, industrial and commercial applications. However, their metabolism and detoxification processes when accumulated in marine invertebratesthe hazards that these particles may have for human healthare still poorly understoodThe work now published evaluates the accumulation of these nanoparticles in marine bivalves (the mussel) and confirms the relevant role of metallothionines and the transcription of the MT10 and MT20 genes in the process of detoxification of quantum dots, nanoparticles of Cd and tellurium when accumulated in mussels

Palynostratigraphic reassessment of the Late Devonian of Bjørnøya, Svalbard

Palynostratigraphic reassessment of the Late Devonian of Bjørnøya, Svalbard

2º Relatório do Estado do Oceano | Nações Unidas

2º Relatório do Estado do Oceano | Nações Unidas

THE STRUCTURE OF INCIPIENT COASTAL COUNTER CURRENTS IN SOUTH PORTUGAL AS INDICATOR OF THEIR FORCING AGENTS

The structure of incipient coastal counter currents in South Portugal as indicator of their forcing agents

Luciano De Oliveira Júnior, Erwan Garel, Paulo Relvas | This study investigates the physics that drive the development of westward, nearshore, currents along the south coast of Portugal (episodically bringing warm water in the region in summer and autumn). Based on a large current dataset, it is shown that these flows tend to develop near the bed first (and later near the surface), contrarily to the opposite, eastward, flows which are often observed near the surface first. This specific pattern of westward flows clearly indicates that they are generally not produced by local wind. Analytical considerations rather support that they result from the imbalance of an alongshore pressure gradient.

Article: The exposure of mussels to metallic nanoparticles of cadmium...

The exposure of mussels to metallic nanoparticles of cadmium (Quantum dots) induces changes in the metallothionein gene (mt20IV) indicating a specific response of this gene in the metabolism and a protection against oxidative stress caused by the accumulation of Quatum dots in mussel tissues. These results are presented in the publication "Changes in metallothionein transcription levels in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to CdTe quantum dots" by Thiago Lopes Rocha, Eider Bilbao, Cátia Cardoso, Manu Soto and Maria João Bebianno published online in the journal Ecotoxicology.
